Blank Sudoku Grid Template

Print empty sudoku grids in any size, with optional candidate dots and a name line.

This page gives you a blank sudoku grid that you can print or save as a file, in sizes from 4x4 to 16x16, plus a samurai layout. It works as a printable sudoku grid for pencil-and-paper play, and as a sudoku template for worksheets or your own puzzles. It runs in your web browser. It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing is installed or uploaded, because the grid is made on your own device. Choose a size, set how many grids go on each page, and print. You can also download one grid as a vector file, which stays sharp at any size.

How to use the Sudoku Grid Template

  1. Choose a grid size: 4x4, 6x6, 9x9, 12x12, 16x16 or samurai.
  2. Choose how many grids to place on each page. The options change with the size: 1, 2, 4 or 6 for 4x4, 6x6 and 9x9; 1, 2 or 4 for 12x12; 1 or 2 for 16x16; and 1 for samurai.
  3. Choose the number of pages, from 1 to 10; every page repeats the same layout.
  4. Choose your paper, US Letter or A4.
  5. Tick Add small candidate dots in each cell if you want faint dots for pencil marks.
  6. Tick Add a Name / Date line if you want one printed on the sheet.
  7. Check the grid width and cell size in millimetres that the tool shows below the preview for your layout.
  8. Click Print / Save as PDF to open the browser print dialog, or click Download SVG to get one grid as a vector file for a worksheet or whiteboard.

The preview shows the first page exactly as it will print, so check it before you print. For large print, choose one grid per page: the grid then uses the full width of the paper inside the margins. The SVG download holds a single grid, so use the print option if you need several grids or pages.

What is a blank sudoku grid used for?

A blank sudoku grid is an empty puzzle board that you fill in by hand. People use one to copy a puzzle from a newspaper or book, so they can try different ideas without marking the original, or to build a new puzzle from scratch.

Teachers use blank grids for classroom worksheets, and anyone can use a single large grid for one puzzle when small print is hard to read. The grid follows the standard sudoku rules: each row, each column and each box must contain every number once. For a 9x9 grid, the numbers are 1 to 9, and the boxes are 3x3 squares marked with thick lines.

Can I print blank 16x16 or 6x6 grids?

Yes. You can print both sizes, and each one has its own box shape. A 6x6 grid uses the numbers 1 to 6, with boxes 3 cells wide and 2 cells high. A 16x16 grid uses the numbers 1 to 16, with boxes 4x4 cells.

Because the cells in a 16x16 grid are small, the tool allows only 1 or 2 grids per page. Choose 1 per page if you want the largest cells. A 6x6 grid can be printed 1, 2, 4 or 6 to a page, so it suits worksheets with several puzzles.

How do I make my own sudoku on a blank grid?

Write a few digits into a 9x9 grid so that no digit repeats in a row, column or box, then try to solve it yourself. The hard part is uniqueness: a fair puzzle has exactly one solution, and a hand-made grid often has several. Type your clues into the Make your own mode of the sudoku generator, which counts the solutions as you type and can suggest a clue, then copy the final clues onto the printed grid.

Which grid size should I print?

Print 9x9 for normal puzzles from books and newspapers, 4x4 or 6x6 for young children, 16x16 for giant puzzles, and the samurai layout for five-grid puzzles. With one grid per page the tool shows how large each cell will be, so you can check that there is room for pencil marks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the blank sudoku grid free to use?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser. Nothing needs to be installed.

How many grids fit on a page?

It depends on the size. 4x4, 6x6 and 9x9 grids can be 1, 2, 4 or 6 per page, 12x12 grids can be 1, 2 or 4 per page, 16x16 grids can be 1 or 2 per page, and the samurai layout is 1 per page.

Can I download the grid?

Yes. Click Download SVG to get one grid as a vector file. It scales without blurring, so it works for worksheets or a whiteboard. To get several grids or pages, use Print / Save as PDF instead.

Can I print a blank 16x16 grid?

Yes. Choose 16x16, then pick 1 or 2 grids per page. Print the page or save it as a PDF.

Are my grids uploaded anywhere?

No. Nothing is uploaded, and the grids are drawn on your own device, even the downloaded SVG file.

Can I add pencil-mark dots or a name line?

Yes. Tick the candidate dots option to add faint dots in each cell for pencil marks. Tick the Name / Date line option to print a line for the name and date.
